Monday August 18, 2025
President Donald Trump hosted a bilateral meeting with the President of Ukraine, Volodymyr Zelenskyy at the White House and afterwards he hosted a multilateral meeting with a number of European leaders also at the White House and present in that meeting was President Zelenskyy.
The European partners included the NATO Secretary General Mark Rutte, President of the European Commission Ursula von der Leyen, Chancellor of Germany Friedrich Merz, Prime Minister of Italy Giorgia Meloni, President of France Emmanuel Macron, Prime Minister of the United Kingdom Keir Starmer, and President of Finland Alexander Stubb.
Their visit to Washington DC followed President Trump’s bilateral meeting with President Vladimir Putin in Anchorage, Alaska on Friday August 15th. The theme of that meeting was Pursuing Peace.
During Monday’s meeting the consensus was that in the end there will be the following:
· Just and lasting peace
· A future trilateral meeting
· Return of the children taken by Russia from Ukraine
· Security Guarantees, NATO-like Article 5 Guarantees
· Prisoner swaps.
President Trump reiterated he wants the war to end and that there may be a deal or no deal.
Finally, President Trump on his Truth Social Post added that he had a good meeting with his distinguished guests, in the White House. He also spoke with President Putin via the phone on Monday. They talked about arrangements for a meeting, at a location to be determined between President Putin and President Zelenskyy. It must be noted that this meeting will come before the much-anticipated trilateral meeting to which President Trump will attend.
President Trump is stridently working towards the end goal of bringing the 2022 Russia-Ukraine War to an end. Thus, as a salient part of the initiative to secure the peace in the future, President Trump added to his Truth Social Post that the Security Guarantees would be provided by the various European Countries, with a co-ordination with the United States.
